Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy says that a second season of the Disney+ hit miniseries ObiWanKenobi is not out of the question: 'I think if there's huge engagement and people really want more Obi-Wan, we’ll certainly give that consideration.'
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy says that Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2 is a very real possibility. The Disney+ miniseries premiered on May 27, 2022, and had a six-episode run. Ewan McGregor stars as the titular character as he attempts to rescue Princess Leia from the Galactic Empire. Obi-Wan eventually crosses paths with his old padawan, Anakin Skywalker , who has turned to the dark side of the Force and become the Sith lord Darth Vader.
While originally conceived to be a spin-off film, Obi-Wan Kenobi was later reworked into a limited-run miniseries after Solo: A Star Wars Story performed lower at the box office than Lucasfilm had expected. The series' director, Deborah Chow, stated that the series was designed to be"one big story with a beginning, middle, and end," and that"the approach has always been that it is one full story.
“Well, frankly, we did set out to do that as a limited series. But I think if there's huge engagement and people really want more Obi-Wan, we’ll certainly give that consideration because the fans, they speak to us. And if we feel like, ‘OK, there’s a real reason to do this; it's answering the why then,’ then we’ll do it. But we’ll see.”
Obi-Wan Kenobi is not the first Disney+ limited series to potentially evolve into a multi-season series. Similar to Kenobi, the Marvel series Moon Knight was also commissioned as a limited series. However, with the immense popularity and success of both shows, there have been rumors of second seasons being given to both — and there are certainly avid fans who would love to see these Disney+ series continue on.
While there is only so much time left between the end of Kenobi and the beginning of A New Hope, there is enthusiasm not only from fans to learn more of Obi-Wan's story, but from the cast as well. Ewan McGregor himself has said that he hopes for another season and that he would be eager to return to the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi whenever the opportunity presents itself.
