The commuter was charged 101 times for one BART trip.
software engineer Mallik Guduguntla arrived at the 12th Street BART station for his usual morning commute from Oakland to South Fremont last Wednesday, nothing seemed out of the ordinary — except for the fact that, for some reason, his digital Clipper card didn’t seem to be working.
Even though he held up his phone to several different turnstiles at two different ends of the station, the drab gray gates simply wouldn’t budge. He heard their familiar, ear-piercing beep, but still they remained shut. Feeling somewhat confused, he approached a BART attendant who eventually let him through, just in time to catch the Warm Springs-bound train.
It was only after he got on that he looked at his recent Google Wallet transactions and saw the charges. At first, there were just a couple. But then he saw an ominous prompt to “see more.”, he saw that BART charged his fare 101 times. “It was $545.40,” he told SFGATE.“Not a great morning,” he added.
It’s unclear whether the money was actually deducted from Guduguntla’s bank account, mainly because he’s “trying to avoid” checking it for now, he said.
