OAKLAND — A high school psychology and economics teacher has been arrested and charged with molesting a then-14-year-old girl throughout her freshman year, in 2004, an alleged crime that authorities say was only discovered last year, court records show.
Taylor worked at the Oakland School of the Arts — a nonprofit charter school — as a math teacher at the time, and the victim was his student, police say. The school’s director did not immediately return an email seeking comment and inquiring about his current employment status. The school’s website doesn’t list him in the directory of current faculty. Public records say Taylor turned himself in to Berkeley police on May 27, apparently after learning he had an arrest warrant. He was charged July 11, court records show.
In an interview with investigators, the alleged victim said she and Taylor “had sex approximately 10 times, both on school grounds and at Taylor’s apartment,” according to a police probable cause statement filed in court. Authorities also say that other former students of Taylor described him as “creepy” and “deeply disturbing,” saying he would flirt with students or offer them hugs. One said she saw the name of a student written in condensation inside Taylor’s vehicle.
