Shootings in New York City this year are down about 12% over last year, and arrests on gun charges are up, according to quarterly crime statistics shared by the NYPD on Thursday.

Police also noted an odd repercussion of taking guns off the street – a greater percentage of recent homicides have been by stabbing. According to LiPetri, about two thirds of murder victims so far in 2022 were shot – a sharp decrease from last year – while more than a quarter were killed by cutting – a sharp increase. LiPetri said that trend reflects a move back toward pre-pandemic levels, when gunshot homicides typically accounted for about 55% to 60% of murders.
