Union president appears to call for a work slowdown by police officers in response to the recommendation that NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo be fired
“Today, for the first time in these five long years, the system of justice is working,” de Blasio said Friday at City Hall. “Today we finally saw a step toward justice and accountability. We saw a process that was actually fair and impartial.”
The NYPD held off for years on taking disciplinary action against Pantaleo as it waited for the Justice Department to rule on criminal charges, a decision that was repeatedly delayed. De Blasio now says the city was wrong to wait, and will not in the future. He called the federal delay “unfathomable.”
“The evidence the CCRB’s prosecutors brought forth at trial was more than sufficient to prove that Pantaleo is unfit to serve,” Davie said. “Commissioner O’Neill must uphold this verdict and dismiss Pantaleo from the department, as was recommended by both the CCRB and the Deputy Commissioner of Trials.”
Activists say Pantaleo must be fired and not allowed to resign or keep part of his pension. The officer was suspended Friday without pay for 30 days. He had been collecting a full paycheck, and has evenPantaleo has no plans to quit, his attorney, Stuart London, said. “He wants to fight going forward. He’s done nothing wrong. He’s committed no misconduct,” London said.
