Hospitalizations of children because of COVID have gone up sharply in New York state, with the number increasing almost five-fold in New York City.
For the week Dec. 5-11, there were 70 new hospitalizations among people 17 and under in the state, with 22 of those new cases in New York City, the State Department of Health said in aFor the past week, Dec. 19-23, there were 184 new pediatric hospitalizations in the state with 109 in the city, according to data reported to the health department through the Health Electronic Response Data System.
“We are alerting New Yorkers to this recent striking increase in pediatric COVID-19 admissions so that pediatricians, parents and guardians can take urgent action to protect our youngest New Yorkers,” said Mary T. Bassett, M.D, acting state health commissioner.Last week, none of the children 5-11 years old who were hospitalized were vaccinated, and only one-fourth of the children 12-17 years old were vaccinated, Bassett said.
State data shows that only 27% of children 5-11 have gotten at least one dose and 16.1% are fully vaccinated. The vaccination rate is much better among children 12-17, with 71.7% having gotten one dose and 64.1% being fully vaccinated. In other COVID news in New York State, the quarantine time for health care workers who test positive has been shortened to five from 10 days, if they’re fully vaccinated and meet other health requirements.
