In many ways, “Nyad” is the biopic its title character, open-water swimmer Diana Nyad, seems to have been mentally starring in for most of her adult life. A familiar figure to anyone who came of age in the 1970s and 1980s, Nyad made a name for herself swimming around Manhattan in 1975; four years later, she swam from the Bahamas to Florida.
For the past 10 years, Nyad has been a figure of controversy among competitive swimmers, some of whom take issue with whether the Cuba swim was unassisted. “Nyad” is less interested in those technicalities, or proving Nyad’s detractors wrong, than bearing witness to what was an incredible feat, regardless of the circumstances.
Diana may be the star of “Nyad,” but Bonnie is the film’s heart and soul, thanks to Foster’s quiet, unshowy instincts and magnetic screen charisma, which dazzles even when she’s dressed down in baggy cargo shorts and dorky shades.
