Monthly count finds nearly 2,000 people living without shelter. A countywide count of homeless people is scheduled for Jan. 26.
The number of homeless people living without shelter in downtown San Diego is approaching 2,000 and has hit a record high for the fifth straight month, a monthly count has revealed.show 1,839 people were counted living on sidewalks or in vehicles on the night of Dec. 29. The count in November found 1,706 people living without shelter downtown, and the homeless population is growing at a faster pace each month.
The count covers East Village, the Gaslamp Quarter and the neighborhoods of City Center, Columbia, Marina and Cortez. While the count shows only downtown neighborhoods, the homeless population appears to be rising countywide. The San Diego Regional Task Force on Homelessness this year began
