“I no longer feel safe here,” says London-based activist, but Bahrain denies hacking nationals in exile with NSO’s Pegasus iOS spyware.
NSO Group says it will investigate any reports of abuse of its iPhone spyware, but doubted the latest claims of Bahraini activists been snooped on. Nine Bahraini activists have had their iPhones hacked by malware allegedly created by $1 billion-valued Israeli spyware giant NSO Group, according to research released Tuesday.
, a coalition of nonprofits and investigative reporters, the NSO tool was potentially used in attempts to snoop on the phones of a significant number of targets over recent years, including a number of elected politicians in France, theeditor and numerous other activists and journalists. Adding further credence to the Pegasus Project’s findings, numbers associated with five of the hacked devices belonging to the Bahrainis were on the group’s list of 50,000 potential targets of NSO customers.
The targets included members of various Bahraini-linked organizations: three from secular Bahraini political society Waad, three from the Bahrain Center for Human Rights, one from Al Wefaq, a Shiite Bahraini political society, and two exiled Bahraini dissidents, both now based in the U.K. - Moosa Abd-Ali and Yusuf Al-Jamri.
