Elon Musk was only in a position to buy Twitter because he's received billions in government handouts. So why is he at war with Pete Buttigieg, the man who regulates Tesla and SpaceX?

Buttigieg's supporters have been surprised by Musk's attacks."If these two gentlemen were in the same room, they'd have a lot to talk about in a meaningful and productive way," a former Buttigieg campaign staffer who's now in the EV space told me."I mean, both brilliant minds. It's unfortunate that there's been chatter."

In early April, as it happens, Buttigieg and Musk actually wound up in the same room, when they both attended another White House summit on EV-charging infrastructure. Earlier this month, when I asked Buttigieg about his conflict with Musk, he tried to put a positive spin on it by praising Musk's participation at the summit."He had some really good and important ideas," Buttigieg said, citing Musk's focus on improving Tesla's network of charging stations.

In antagonizing Buttigieg, Musk has shown his characteristic lack of strategic forethought. As Transportation secretary, Buttigieg has the authority to regulate two of Musk's companies: Tesla, via the NHTSA, and SpaceX, through the Office of Commercial Space Transportation. And with Buttigieg topping mostlikely to win the party's nomination in 2024 if Biden doesn't run again, he may soon be in charge of a lot more than that.

But Musk, as always, seems inclined to go after anyone he perceives as standing in his way."He's happy to treat people — his regulators, his customers, and everyone — that way," said Beth Osborne, who served as acting assistant secretary for transportation policy."To date, it's only resulted in worship. So why wouldn't he continue doing what works?"
