Ross Stripling and Joc Pederson reminisce about the chaotic five days in February 2020 when they were on the verge of being traded to the Angels. Now reunited with the Giants, they reflect on the uncertainty and confusion they experienced during that time.
As he packed his bags for spring training three years ago, Ross Stripling didn’t know which team’s complex he would head to when his flight touched down. Already in the desert, A.J. Pollock hosted Joc Pederson but wasn’t sure if that was his teammate taking swings in his batting cage.“It was weird, for sure,” Pederson said. “It sucked. It was stupid.”
Reunited in San Francisco three years later, the contingent of former Dodgers in the Giants clubhouse was reminded this week on their visit to Angel Stadium of what happened there. Or almost did, but didn’t. Of the trade that was, and then wasn’t. “I was in Chipotle and Nightengale tweeted Stripling is in the trade,” Stripling said. “At the time, when I first read it, I thought I was going to Boston. Quickly it was like, no, Joc and Stripling are going to the Angels for Rengifo. … It lasted like four days where I wasn’t getting answers, my agent didn’t know anything, Friedman was calling me like once a day, just saying like look, man, we’re trying to get it done. I could just tell he didn’t know.
Ross Stripling, left, along with Joc Pederson, Walker Buehler and Cody Bellinger #35 of the Los Angeles Dodgers against the San Diego Padres in the third inning of a MLB baseball game at Dodger Stadium on Friday, July 05, 2019 in Los Angeles, California. “Joc’s a nervous body, for sure,” Stripling said. “He was calling me quite a bit. We were definitely nervous. It’s kind of funny we were in that bucket together, texting each other. I think our wives were texting each other.
