, and now as vice chair of San Diego Community Power have been part of launching one of the largest renewable energy aggregators in the state along with four other jurisdictions and the county of San Diego.
As mayor of Chula Vista from 2002 to 2006, I led the way in protecting our clean environment. I passed the first-ever climate action plan in San Diego County, and on the California Coastal Commission, I’ve worked to change our development policies to prepare for sea-level rise and embrace environmental justice.
I look forward to the implementation of this policy because it will keep us healthy and safe. Our air needs to be clean for ourselves and our children to breathe, and in many places right now, that is not the case. We must take thoughtful, well-planned, bold action.A: Working families rely on transit, and we need to make it faster, safer and more appealing.
Q: More and more resources are being dedicated to the homelessness issue, yet California has more homeless people than ever. Do you see progress? A: This is a personal issue for me that I’ve seen from both sides now. I faced discrimination as a person of color, and I served as a police detective because I’m passionate about keeping our families safe. Additionally, as a resident and citizen, it’s just as clear to me as it is to everyone else that yes, crime is going up.
Q: The state has had giant surpluses in recent years yet there are worries about a potential recession. How would you ensure the state is prepared to weather an economic downturn? What will you do for Californians who are struggling economically now? A: As a former police detective, I have seen firsthand the damage guns can do to our families and our communities. Weapons of war do not belong in our streets. Weapons of death do not belong in the hands of children, domestic abusers or others who will use them to cause injury or death intentionally or not.
