Nov. 2022 Election: Q&A with Shana Hazan, candidate for San Diego Unified School Board, District B [Opinion]
The district should implement these evidence and trauma-informed solutions to keep our schools safe: create evidence-based crisis assessment/prevention programs in schools; implement expert-endorsed school security upgrades, including entry control and locks; initiate trauma-informed emergency planning; avoid practices that can cause harm and traumatize students; foster a safe and trusting school climate; build a culture of secure gun storage.
Data from some district elementary schools that have implemented restorative practices show decreases in suspensions, increases in attendance and improvement in reading skills. Unfortunately, all schools are not maximizing training/resources available from the district’s Restorative Justice Practices Department and many lack the counselors/trauma-informed professionals required to support the development of restorative learning environments on every campus.
At times, I’ve observed rushed votes on nuanced issues that could benefit from robust discussion. While some votes are time-sensitive, more often there is time to push a vote to a later meeting to allow for the discourse and debate required.
A: All people should have the freedom to make their own medical decisions with their health care providers. I am committed to protecting access to comprehensive reproductive health care, including abortion and access to contraceptives, and support Proposition 1.
