Five years after MeToo, nothing has changed for women walking home at night ✍️ SCFGallagher

Five years after the #MeToo movement peaked in 2017 – accelerated by the accusations against disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein – the cycle of gender-based violence and tragedy continues, entirely uninterrupted.

A UN survey from 2021 found 70 per cent of women in the UK have experienced sexual harassment in public. This rises to 97 per cent in 18 to 24-year-olds. Four out of five women feel unsafe walking alone after dark in a park or other open space. Despite some optimism that the Covid-19 lockdown might have improved street-harassment statistics, by simply reducing the number of people out on the streets, this was not the case. A poll by Plan UK found that a fifth of women experienced street harassment during the spring lockdown, a figure which rose to 51 per cent in summer as restrictions eased.

We should feel ashamed at being content asking women to rely on smart straws that go blue if rohypnol, GHB or ketamine is added to their drink while they dance with friends. In telling them to use a hair scrunchie that transforms into a drink cover so their glass is sealed at all times. Trying to sell them anti-rape underwear that is essentially a chastity belt but might buy them a few more seconds before a rapist has them undressed.

Giving all women the right to walk home alone at night, to live without fear of being attacked, is both the simplest demand and seemingly still the most radical. It shows just how far we have to go, even with all the talk of progress. Men now must ask – as women have long done – how do we change the world so that women can be free?
