Regulars and first-timer packed the storied San Antonio diner on its final day

SAN ANTONIO — Liz Torres can’t remember exactly when she visited the Pig Stand for the first time as a kid. But she sure won’t forget her last visit Sunday as a grandmother.
Many came for the Pig Stand’s last stand. It ended more than a century of filling people up on burgers, onion rings and other classic diner fare. To the end, Pig Stand stuck to its Americana environs and menu, from the ruby-red booths and black-and-white checkered floors to those greasy-good fish and chips and old-fashioned malts and milkshakes.
Jukebox music from Selena to Sinatra mixed with the din of clanging plates and cutlery, as patrons slid into those red booths and plopped onto red counter stools. A few snapped photos of the vintage pictures that lined the walls like a timeline to the restaurant’s bygone days, or of the many kitschy pig figurines and other porcine, porcelain knickknacks that have long dotted the diner.
“Oh my gosh, to me, I feel so loved by this community, and then so sad to leave it,” she said. “This is my second home. This is my second family here. I’m just happy that I have 56 years with these people. I couldn’t ask for more.”
