A U.S. defense official confirmed to ABC News that North Korea launched a ballistic missile over Japan on Tuesday local time but didn't offer other specifics.

The White House said in a statement late Monday local time in Washington, D.C., that "the United States strongly condemns the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's dangerous and reckless decision to launch a long-range ballistic missile over Japan."
