Oceanside resident Stephanie Thompson will oversee mental health care services at Gary & Mary West PACE, which provides an array of age-in-place support
Because of several health conditions including asthma, bronchitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, 76-year-old Alexis White was encouraged by her doctor several years ago to move to Southern California so her lungs could benefit from the region’s warmer weather.
At the Gary and Mary West PACE senior health facility in San Marcos, Andrea Burgan of Critter Encounters, of Ramona, holds out an opossum for PACE client Alexis White, of Vista, to get acquainted with. Burgan regularly visits to give presentations on animals to the seniors. In her newly created role at West PACE, Thompson will oversee the facility’s social workers, as well as a new program focused on psychiatry and other geriatric behavioral health services.Through the behavioral health program, Thompson hopes to remove any stigma older clients may associate with seeking mental health services.
Before the launch of behavioral health services, about 10 percent of West PACE clients were seeking mental health care from outside organizations, executive director Rena Smith said. Now, about a quarter of the nonprofit’s clients are receiving behavioral health care in-house, and about half of West PACE’s clients could benefit from behavioral health interventions.and older, about 20 percent experience a mental health concern.
