Two people have died and 20 are still unaccounted for after flooding inundated parts of western North Carolina following Tropical Depression Fred

.

More than 200 rescuers in Haywood County, just west of Asheville, were going home to home Thursday morning and searching along the Pigeon River to account for the missing individuals, according to county Emergency Services. Two people were confirmed dead on Wednesday night. “Yesterday afternoon, we started getting reports of high water,” Haywood County Sheriff Greg Christopher said Wednesday. “The water level began to rise a whole lot faster than I have ever saw it rise here in our county.“

Nearly a foot of rain fell in some areas of western North Carolina over three days, according to Gov. Roy Cooper, who said Haywood County appeared to be the most severely affected. Photos published by the Western Mountain division of the North Carolina Department of Transportation showed extensive damage to roads and bridges. In Cruso, a small community in the western part of the state, 10 to 15 bridges had been damaged or completely destroyed, according to the agency.
