Tackling Awareness of Mental Health Issues' Change Makers programme is using sport to help clubs and communities to raise awareness about mental health and help them support one another
A North Belfast charity is working with clubs, schools and youth groups across Northern Ireland in order to use sport to raise awareness around mental health and how it can impact people.
Speaking to Belfast Live, Joe Donnelly from TAMHI, said that the aim of the programme is to help others work within their communities to support others with their mental health, and the resources they provide can be adapted to a range of different sports and can be focused on certain issues that are impacting communities at a certain time.
"By using sport to get people thinking about mental health, we have found that we are better able to engage with young people in particular who may be turned off from a long talk or powerpoint presentation. He said: "I was first introduced to TAMHI during my time at school and it inspired me to get more involved with them and volunteer.
It has recently been shortlisted for the National Lottery Project of the Year and will be competing for public votes against 17 other charities to achieve the title.
