The North Aurora Police Department put itself on display Saturday with its sixth annual community picnic which began at noon at the police station at 200 S. Lincolnway.

For three hours, kids could enjoy some fun and games, check out police and public works vehicles, tour the building and munch down on free hot dogs, chips and soda as officers manned the grills.Deputy Chief Joseph Gorski of the North Aurora Police Department believes it’s important that the local community sees officers and the department “in a different light.”

One of the new attractions this year was the chance for people to meet Zelda, the department’s new comfort dog. “I was put in charge of this and the first time we did it was back in the time when police and the community didn’t have a great relationship. We had this picnic, and it was like a breath of fresh air,” he said. “It changed the culture. They saw us as people asking questions and we are really trying to focus on attracting young talent as well. We’re really having trouble attracting new people that want to be police officers.

“I came last year and we enjoyed the events for the kids,” she said. “I think this is a proactive event helping with community policing and community members.”
