Austin and Aaron Nola will be just sixth set of brothers to face each other in postseason; no siblings have ever faced off as a pitcher and a hitter in playoffs
A.J. and Stacie Nola celebrated the Phillies’ NLDS upset over the Braves on the field Saturday at Citizens Bank Park with their youngest son. They eventually said their goodbyes to Aaron, scurried back to their hotel in downtown Philadelphia and flipped on the TV just in time to catch Austin’s game beginning in San Diego just after 10 p.m. local time.
Whether the Nolas will ever get used to it, they are at least becoming accustomed to these meetings now that Austin Nola’s career arc finally caught his younger brother’s. Kid brother earned the upper hand during last year’s initial showdown, striking out Austin with some of the hardest pitches he’s ever thrown. This year, Austin got the winning hit and the only RBI of the game off his younger brother.
Not only are stakes ratcheted up with a World Series berth on the line over the next week, the occasion is about as rare as it gets. Just five other sets of siblings have met in a postseason series, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, and none will have ever faced each other as a batter and a hitter on a such a stage when Austin steps into the box against Aaron on Wednesday at Petco Park.
