Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley is making headway in the 2024 presidential race, tying with Gov. Ron DeSantis as Iowa voters' favorite Republican candidate behind former President Donald Trump.

“I feel like she’s fresh, and I liked what she said about how the things that she did as governor of South Carolina — I mean … she’s a strong woman,” voter Kristy Beckwith, 60, of Ankeny, Iowa, told NBC News. The Florida governor was projected to be Trump's fiercest competitor in the 2024 Republican primary but is losing support in battleground states New Hampshire and Iowa to Haley. In New Hampshire, Haley soared to 19% among voters, while DeSantis fell to 10%.

Haley is the only candidate who could beat President Joe Biden by a considerable margin in the general election, according to a CNN poll and an NBC News poll after the first debate, noting her popularity among independents. However, DeSantis maintains his second-place standing with a RealClearPolitics average of 12.6% compared to Haley's 8.3%.
