Nike launches sustainable sneakers made from “space waste” Sustainability Nike
Nike has announced the launch of its “Space Hippie” collection, inspired by NASA’s use of resources left in space.
Nike has created the shoe from its own “space junk” from the floors of its warehouses such as recycled water bottles, t-shirts, and scraps of yarn. The “crater foam” tooling is made from a combination of Nike Grind rubber and recycled foam. The new shoe has the lowest carbon footprint score of any of Nike’s products.
The collection includes four futuristic designs, named Space Hippie 01, 02, 03, and 04. The designs feature a grey, knitted body with orange elements, including the iconic Nike “swoosh”. The Space Hippie collection will be launched in Spring 2020 at the Nike House of Innovation flagship stores and select retailers.
Seana Hannah, vice president of sustainable innovation at Nike, said: “We must think about the entire process: how we design it, how we make it, how we use it, how we reuse it and how we cut out waste at every step. These are the fundamentals of a circular mindset that inform best practices.”
