After rejecting a sequel, Nightmare Before Christmas director Henry Selick pitched a prequel about Jack Skellington's Halloweentown origin story.

Led by director Henry Selick and creator and executive producer Tim Burton, Nightmare followed Jack Skellington as he discovered Christmas Town and chose to conquer it for the benefit of Halloween Town. The movie became an instant classic and was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe.
While Selick and Burton are not interested in any sequels, due to a lack of any compelling ideas, there is still a chance to watch more Nightmare Before Christmas. Speaking to People, Selick and Sarandon both expressed interest in a prequel. The story would follow Jack's adventure to become Halloween Town's king. Check out their reactions below:
Selick: It might be more interesting to do a prequel. There might be a more interesting story there about how Jack became the King of Halloween Town. Does Nightmare Before Christmas Need A Prequel? There is no real reason to attempt a sequel to the well-known Christmas adventure. The movie was fully self-contained and left few openings for any follow-ups.
A prequel, however, is a far more compelling angle. With so many spooky monsters waiting in Halloween Town, there has always been a question about how Jack became their king in the first place. It would have been a treacherous fight, and Jack's journey could very well be eye-opening. Besides, it could reveal more about his interests and motivations along the way, while also developing the world.
Currently, Burton is busy with Beetlejuice 2 and Wednesday season 2, so a prequel would take some time to develop. Still, it could very well work its way into his schedule. The Nightmare Before Christmas has become a classic movie for both the Halloween and Christmas seasons, and there are very few reasons not to dive into the universe to create more engaging content.
