West African countries and global powers hope there is still a window of opportunity for mediation with Niger's coup leaders before a Thursday summit that could agree on military intervention to restore democracy

Heads of state from the Economic Community of West African States are preparing for a summit on Thursday to discuss their standoff with the Niger junta, which defiedThe possibility of military intervention will be discussed, but ECOWAS has said it is a last resort.

The letter also denounced "a climate of threatened aggression against Niger" and said the schedule and content of the visit would have to be agreed with the junta before the envoys were allowed to enter. "There's no doubt that diplomacy is the best way to resolve this situation," U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken told French radio station RFI on Tuesday., where French, German and Italian troops are also stationed.
