Nicolas Cage wanted to homage Christopher Lee's Dracula look in Renfield. 'I favored Christopher Lee as Dracula and I liked his kind of sixties hairdo, the wardrobe, the costume.'
Nicolas Cage reveals his Dracula look in Renfield is an homage to one classic portrayal. Renfield, from The Lego Batman Movie director Chris McKay, stars Nicholas Hoult in the title role, Awkwafina, and Cage as Dracula. The film is a horror comedy based on an original idea from The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman that sees Dracula as a nightmare boss, with Hoult's Renfield dealing with the hardships his servitude brings.
While speaking with Collider, Cage revealed his look as Dracula in Renfield was an homage to the late Christopher Lee's iconic vampire. He elaborates, talking about how the final interpretation was a collaborative process, with the idea stemming from the creative team, which Cage embraced and brought to life. Still, Lee's performance was one he admired, helping inform what audiences will see in his own.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY "Well, I had a lot of help. There were a ton of super-talented people on that movie that helped design the look. We wanted it to be more homage, more Christopher Lee. I favored Christopher Lee as Dracula and I liked his kind of sixties hairdo, but the wardrobe, the costume, and no, I didn't come up with the idea for the rings. That all came out of a wardrobe. They came in with all that.
While Cage's performance as Dracula has only been given small glimpses in the trailer and promotional materials, Lee's influence can be seen. Taking a look at Cage's Dracula, from the hair, the menacing show of fangs, and the choices in the outfit, the production's intended homage looks to have paid off.
Renfield is also a horror comedy, allowing Cage to play with humor, whereas Lee's performances were more dramatic. Still, Cage looks to have focused Lee's intensity on the comedic situations of the film, making for a wholly unique performance that draws from a classic source, which brings something new and exciting to a character people have seen an overabundance of. Audiences are bound to see more of Cage's eccentric take on Dracula before Renfield hits theaters in April.
