The longest-serving First Minister in history – and the first woman to hold the role – also highlighted the greater “intensity” and “brutality” of life as a politician in recent years, noting that “there is virtually no privacy” and that “even ordinary stuff” becomes “very difficult”. She added that, while the decision may seem sudden, she has been wrestling with it for some weeks, and that she will remain in office until her successor is elected.
