Sue McBride is speaking out to raise awareness of developmental language disorders as they are relatively unknown
A mum from Belfast has spoken about how she spotted symptoms of her son's developmental language disorder while she was home-schooling during lockdown.
It can significantly affect how a child learns, as well as their educational development throughout school life. Children with DLD may also experience social, emotional, and behavioural problems. "He was reassessed by a speech and language therapist and educational psychologist. His language scores were not in line with his overall cognitive ability or expected age equivalent, this then resulted in the diagnosis of DLD. It made so much sense, everything just fell into place then.
She said: If a child has speech sound difficulties, it can be quite obvious. Sometimes that can accompany a DLD, but a lot of the time children with DLD can sound completely typical or "normal." With DLD there are difficulties with the child's ability to understand the language being used around them, and with their ability to fully articulate and express themselves.
"It's ultimately why we want to raise awareness as if DLD goes unidentified, it then goes unsupported, and there are negative consequences like personal development as well as the emotional, social, and mental health aspects for a child."
