The flight from Palma to Belfast was cancelled amid UK-wide air traffic control disruption
A Bank Holiday weekend in the sun turned to holiday hell for a Co Antrim man whose flight home was cancelled with the next direct return offered by the airline being a week later.
Speaking to Belfast Live, Simon said EasyJet alerted them quickly about disruption due to the technical glitch, but by the time they arrived to the airport their flight had already been delayed by almost nine hours. When it came to attempting to rebook on to flights home, indirect flights were available five or six days from the original flight date, while the next direct flights to Belfast were for a week later, on Monday, September 4.
"There were no flights at all available for five or six days," Simon explained. "The crew at the airport were very rude to us, they said it wasn't their problem and we had to sort it ourselves. "Saturday morning we're flying home, we go to Liverpool then wait five hours before going to Belfast. The earliest direct flight was the following Monday September 4, a couple standing beside us booked on to that. Everyone was trying to help each other at the airport because nobody else was doing it."
Addressing this issue, a spokesperson for EasyJet said: "Due to the Air Traffic Control systems failure affecting UK airspace yesterday, some flights were unfortunately unable to operate.
