A walkout by junior doctors next week will cause “severe disruption” to hospital services with a “huge impact” on waiting lists and elective care, NHS England’s top doctor has warned
NHS England has said it will prioritise resources to protect emergency and critical care, maternity care and where possible patients who have waited the longest for elective care and cancer surgery.
Professor Sir Stephen Powis, NHS England National Medical Director, has warned of “severe disruption” to hospital services as a result of next week’s 72-hour walkout by junior doctors.. Dr Rob Laurenson and Dr Vivek Trivedi, the BMA junior doctors’ committee co-chairs said: “We want nothing more than to enter into meaningful negotiations around proposals to deliver pay restoration for junior doctors.
Vivek Trivedi and Rob Laurenson, co-chairs of the BMA’s junior doctors’ committee said there had been no “credible offer” from the Government. In a united statement with NHS Confederation, which represents healthcare systems in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and the Shelford Group, a collaboration of ten of the largest teaching and research NHS hospital trusts in England, they called for calls on all sides to “realise the harm a strike will do ad redouble efforts to enter negotiations”.
“It’s not too late for all sides to realise the harm a strike will do and redouble efforts to enter negotiations and avoid industrial action.Health Secretary Steve Barclay called for “constructive dialogue” with junior doctors.
