Kieran Tierney to Newcastle transfer is back ON with a catch as Eddie Howe gets creative to shut Celtic return door NUFC
Determined Newcastle United are doubling down on their long-running pursuit of Kieran Tierney as they get set to finally make their move.
The 26-year-old is facing an increasingly uncertain Arsenal future and now Eddie Howe is poised to strike with a creative proposal to mitigate any financial fair play restrictions his team face. The Telegraph report a deal is being eyed to take Tierney on loan to St James' Park with a potential obligation to buy next summer. It comes after La Liga side Real Sociedad were rebuffed over a potential straight loan for this summer.
Tierney's former club Celtic remain major admirers in their homegrown star with returning boss Brendan Rodgers refusing to rule out a box office return earlier this summer. But Newcastle's potential deal – which would come with a set transfer fee in the summer of 2024 – would likely blow other suitors out the water. Tierney's Arsenal future appears grim with a cast of players earning game time before him at left-back with Oleksandr Zinchenko nursing an injury.
Jurrien Timber, a natural right-sided defender, started in the Premier League opener at left-back before hobbling with Tierney watching from the stands. Now Newcastle will make their move for either Tierney or Chelsea outcast Marc Cucurella before the window closes. It is understood the Scotland international is Howe's preferred choice in a summer where he has signed Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes and Tino Livaremento.
Now Tierney could be next with Champions League football returning to Tyneside for the first time in 20 years with Howe's side aiming to build upon their top four finish from a season ago. Tierney is valued around £30m and Celtic are in line for a sell-on fee for a player who left his boyhood club in a £25m deal in the summer of 2019.
