The veteran officerr was convicted of second-degree official misconduct and one count of theft following a jury trial in New Jersey Superior Court.

A veteran Newark police officer was convicted Wednesday of collecting $46,000 in sick pay while working for more than a month as a hospital security guard, authorities said.

Gibson, who was with the police department for 25 years, faces a mandatory five-year prison term when he is sentenced on April 28, Stephens said in a statement. Gibson worked as a private security guard at a local hospital for 32 days during his sick leave. On 31 of those days, he was scheduled to work for the Newark Police Department, Stephens said.
