Republicans in New York have ridiculed the move as an attempt to embarrass the president.
President Donald Trump speaks during the presentation of the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point football team in the Rose Garden of the White House, Monday, May 6, 2019, in Washington.
“One period of taxes that has been leaked shows many inconsistencies," said Brad Hoylman, the Democratic state senator who is spearheading the legislation. “A lot of Americans want to know what else there is.” “The New York state tax returns likely contain information that is similar to what is in the federal returns,” said Harry Sandick, former assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, noting his business losses and income would likely be similar at the federal and state levels.
The state tax returns can only be released under Hoylman’s legislation if requested by any of three committees: The House Ways and Means Committee; the Senate Finance Committee; or the Joint Committee on Taxation. It would likely not contain any information about IRS audits into Trump’s tax returns, a key part of Neal’s request, as those would not be filed in the state returns.
Hoylman, the state senator, said he had consulted extensively with counsel about his legislation and was confident in its legality.
