The city kept its promise and almost 1,500 municipal employees are without a job. VaccineMandate
City Hall fired 1,430 public sector workers, who make up less than 1% of the city’s workforce, over their fight against vaccinations from the COVID-19 infection.
While Eric Adams may be the current mayor, these rules were set during the tail end of Bill de Blasio’s administration. Under his jurisdiction, the former mayor declared that all new city workers and those who spent months on leave without pay were to be vaccinated by February 11th. Among those fired were 36 NYPD members, 25 fire department members and 700 members of the United Federation of Teachers . UFT officials tried to block the firings last week, but appeals in court were dismissed.
The teachers’ union isn’t taking the firings lying down. Union leaders believe that a lack of due process should leave the city’s actions dead on arrival.
