Twelve people with COVID-19 have died in the state, which has the largest number of confirmed cases in the country.
Dire warnings from de Blasio New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio warned Tuesday on CNN that the disruptions in the city could last “well through the summer.” HE called on the federal government to “put money back in the hands of people” and compared the economic moment to the Great Depression. “Coming up with the same rules is imperative,” Cuomo said Monday. “So we have agreed to a common set of rules that will pertain in all of our states.”
New York City public schools closed Effective Monday, New York City public schools will be closed, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Sunday. Schools will remain open for the only the next five days to provide meals to students who need them and remote learning will begin on March 23. The Mayor said schools will be closed at least until April 20 and potentially for the rest of the school year.
New York City officials call for a shut down On Sunday, top New York City officials began calling a shutdown in the city, beginning with city comptroller Scott Stringer: “Everyone in New York should assume that they have been in contact with COVID 19” New York City officials briefed United Nations diplomats on Saturday that the coronavirus has spread throughout the city, could threaten residents through late September, and that “everyone in New York should assume that they have been in contact...
On Friday, Cuomo announced that New Rochelle, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in New York, had opened a drive-through testing center, which will be by appointment only. And he said that the federal government had agreed that the state could conduct coronavirus testing at 28 additional private labs, which will bring capacity to 6,000 tests a day by next week.
State to speed up testing private labs At a press conference on March 11, Governor Cuomo once again expressed intense frustration with the federal government’s slow rollout of coronavirus testing, before announcing that New York was taking matters into its own hands. Cuomo said that the state had contracted with more than 20 private local labs that could handle testing, upping New York’s capacity — though he couldn’t say exactly by how much.
How many coronavirus tests have been done in New York? That’s not clear. New York is not currently reporting the number of coronavirus tests conducted in the state; it is now only reporting the number of positive cases. Public officials have insisted that the state’s testing capacity continues to ramp up — but we don’t yet know how many tests.
Central Park Conservancy president Elizabeth W. Smith, who is Cotton’s wife, has also tested positive and felt some symptoms over the weekend. A dozen colleagues of hers are now self-quarantining at home.
