The top five roads for total hours of traffic delay, based on time wasted in 2021 compared to free-flowing conditions.As a result, some roads lost commuters but gained morning shoppers and daytime errand-runners, such as Fry Road in western Harris County. Fry, a major street funneling traffic between I-10 and FM 529, also has seen explosive residential and commercial growth north of the freeway, taking it from the 409th most congested roadway segment in the state to 81st.
“You might still jump on the Katy Freeway but you just went two exits,” Schrank said. “You didn't drive downtown, but you were out on the freeway and on the arterials.” All but two of those congested roads are in Harris County, with two in Montgomery County barely making the top 100.Although the Houston area showing up repeatedly toward the top of the list was not a surprise, there were various changes about where drivers will see the worst delays, Schrank said, and what researchers can now say with confidence changed congestion patterns.
