New House Speaker and former speaker are polar opposites
The easiest way to understand the politics of new House Speaker Mike Johnson is to think of former Speaker Nancy Pelosi.He voted against certifying President Joe Biden’s election victory, and against last month’s temporary spending bill that prevented the government from shutting down.
“The Swamp is on the run, MAGA is ascendent,’’ said Rep. Matt Gaetz, who orchestrated the move to depose Speaker Kevin McCarthy. “If you don’t think that moving from Kevin McCarthy to ‘MAGA Mike Johnson’ shows the ascendance of this movement and where the power in this party truly lies, then you’re not paying attention.’’But it is not just in ideology that Johnson differs from Pelosi.
And while he pleased conservatives with his acceptance speech, there is much more to being Speaker than serving as the public face of your party. Deciding how to distribute committee assignments and legislative proposals to advance party priorities is essential, as is raising and distributing cash to vulnerable candidates.
