New 'shopping robots' take to Greater Manchester's streets for official launch
A new set of shopping delivery robots in Trafford were officially launched today . The box-shaped robots, from Starship Technologies, have been spotted roaming the streets of Sale in recent weeks and have now been officially launched to offer an alternative to driving out to the shops.
The orders are made through an app before being stocked into the robot and delivered to properties. The groceries are securely locked inside the robot which has a 'robust' security system before safely travelling on pavements where it needs to go.It is hoped if this goes successfully it can be rolled out in more areas of Greater Manchester.
Andrew Curtis, UK Operations Manager at Starship Technologies, said: “We are very pleased to offer the benefits of autonomous delivery to thousands of residents in Greater Manchester from today and continue our expansion in the north of England. The robots provide ease and convenience for people, while also making a positive contribution to reducing congestion and carbon emissions.
