Managing it can help reduce neuroticism, anxiety, and the risk of cardiovascular disease. A new study published in the open-access journal General Psychiatry found that high diastolic blood pressure, the lower number in a blood pressure reading, is highly likely to cause neurotic personality trait.
Neurotic personality traits refer to a pattern of emotional instability, anxiety, and self-doubt. People with high levels of neurotic traits tend to experience negative emotions such as fear, guilt, and shame, and may be more prone to anxiety and mood disorders. They may also have difficulty coping with stress and uncertainty, and may engage in maladaptive behaviors such as avoidance or rumination.
Between 30% and 60% of blood pressure is down to genetic factors, and over 1000 genetic single nucleotide polymorphisms, or SNPs for short, are associated with it. SNPs help predict a person’s response to certain drugs, susceptibility to environmental factors, and their risk of developing diseases.extracted from blood samples from people of predominantly European ancestry .
But after adjusting for multiple tests, only diastolic blood pressure was significantly associated with neuroticism , based on 1074 SNPs. “Individuals with neuroticism can be sensitive to the criticism of others, are often self-critical, and easily develop anxiety, anger, worry, hostility, self-consciousness, and depression.
