CAR magazine UK gives its first impressions of the next-generation Porsche Panamera
In 2027, the all-electric Panamera is expected to first see the light. What happens to the ICE/PHEV sister model introduced in 2016, you ask? Well, it’s due a replacement early next year, to begin its final seven-year life cycle early. A bit like the Cayenne, Porsche will sell the ICE/EV versions alongside one another. Consider the bets hedged.
‘Making a very good car even better sounds like the easiest trick in the book but is almost always a huge challenge,’ says the project leader Thomas Frimuth. ‘In case of the G3, the main focus was on the chassis, drivetrain and interior. The pure standalone character of the Panamera remains unchanged, but performance, ride and handling, the PHEV application and the in-car entertainment are all significantly improved.
While Sport Plus feels a little firmer than before, Normal is subjectively a tad more compliant. ‘Exactly!’ exclaims Frimuth. ‘The goal of the new set-up is to broaden the scope. There is no need for a cushier Comfort calibration anymore, and in a sport-luxury car like this you don’t want to go any stiffer either.’
Out of the V6 and into the V8 Turbo E-Hybrid that replaces the petrol-engined Turbo S. Since the reveal is still a few months away, Porsche is coy about the final specification, but expect around 680bhp, clearing the air above for the 750bhp Turbo S E-Hybrid due later next year. At this point, all bhp numbers are still to be taken with a pinch of salt.
