The newest Pixar movie, Elemental, has one of the studio's lowest box office debuts in the three decades since Toy Story's initial release.
Pixar's Elemental is off to a rocky start. Elemental is a love story that follows two complete opposites — fire and water. As Ember Lumen and Wade Ripple fall in love and learn to connect with each other, they grapple with societal disapproval, the serious differences between their elemental states, and family expectations along the way.
Unfortunately, Elemental has not exactly proven to be as successful as many of Pixar's other ventures. Elemental debuted at $11.8 million on Friday, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and is projected to earn between $28 million and $32 million through its opening weekend. Depending on where it falls, this could be the lowest-earning opening weekend Pixar has had since Toy Story's $29 million take in 1995.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Elemental's Shocking Box Office Disappointment After Lightyear proved to be a financial disaster for Disney and Pixar, several key Pixar workers were fired and the studio was left to leave its hopes with Elemental. Unfortunately, the production is not proving to be the savior that Pixar needed.
Elemental is only the second Pixar theatrical release since the COVID-19 pandemic prevented Seeing Red and other Pixar productions from making it onto the big screen. While Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way of Water, and John Wick: Chapter 4 have proven that box office success is still possible in the aftermath of the lockdowns, the continued viability of animated movies remained in question. At least, that was true prior to the release of The Super Mario Bros.
The success of other major productions has left Elemental's early failures baffling. The film has been enjoying positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes with a 91 percent audience rating at the time of this writing. If Elemental is to become a success for Disney and Pixar, it will need to translate those reviews into more theatrical viewers before Elemental turns into the next Lightyear.
