New update for people on DWP legacy benefits or Tax Credits due to move to Universal Credit
The Department for Work and Pensions recently announced that people in the West of Scotland on Tax Credits-only will receive letters this month inviting them to claim Universal Credit as the UK Government expands the managed migration of legacy benefit claimants to the modern IT welfare system. It has now been confirmed that people in the ‘East of Scotland’ will receive similar Migration Notices from September, along with several other locations in England and Wales.
Tax Credits claimants in Scotland have been urged not to miss the deadline on the managed migration letter for making an application for Universal Credit as this will “affect the processes for some Social Security Scotland benefits, including Scottish Child Payment, Best Start Foods, Best Start Grants and Funeral Support Payment”.
It's also worth noting that 100,000 Tax Credits claimants will receive transitional protection after, which means they should not see any reduction in their benefits when they transfer to Universal Credit. HM Revenue and Customs administers Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit and has previously advised claimants that both benefits will be replaced by Universal Credit by the end of 2024.
Migration process from legacy benefits to Universal Credit There are three ways people can migrate to Universal Credit, outlined in the DWP’s ‘2022-24 strategy for implementing the final phase of Universal Credit’ - you can read it in full on the GOV.UK website, here.Latest Benefits News Who will be better or worse off on Universal Credit?
