Sofia Dahl, of New Lenox, spent a week studying bottlenose dolphins in Sarasota, Florida, as part of the Chicago Zoological Society’s King Conservation Science Scholars Marine Mammal Research Expedition.
Sofia Dahl, of New Lenox, said she was most surprised to learn how often and how close to shore bottlenose dolphins surface while participating in a marine mammal research program in Sarasota, Florida. “I just didn’t know about their behaviors and how often they interact with boats and how that is detrimental to them sometimes,” Dahl said. “I was just surprised how often they come up just close to the shore and the residential areas there.
There are only eight spots for the expedition and 250 scholars in the program, which makes it competitive, said Chris Conner, manager of the program.Conner said the students spend three days out on the water gathering data and two days in the lab recording their data. Dahl said they collected data, such as the longitude and latitude, and measured the water temperature and salt content.
