A New Jersey state trooper was being prepped for surgery to his lower leg after being shot in his patrol car in Paterson. NatDuddridgeTV reports.
The trooper was hospitalized at Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center and being prepped for surgery for a gunshot wound to his lower leg, authorities said.The scene started unfolding at around 1 a.m. A large police presence spanned several blocks near McLean Boulevard and Ninth Avenue.
"We just heard the gunshots and the next thing we know, cops were flying down the street and they had it blocked off for two blocks," said Alicia Allen, a neighbor. Police did not disclose the circumstances that led to the shooting, but officials confirmed the trooper was alone in his vehicle when it happened.
The trooper applied a tourniquet to his leg before fellow troopers rushed to his aid and got him to the hospital, officials said. "He's been in stable condition all night, spirits are phenomenal. His efforts to apply a tourniquet immediately after he was shot, to himself, as well as the troopers that were with him that threw him into a car and got him here within minutes, a really phenomenal effort," said State Police Superintendent Colonel Pat Callahan. 8:57 AMGov.
