Historic preservation authorities in New Jersey refused to place Dr. King's house in Camden on the state’s Historic Registry.

. King conducted his 1950 protest while he attended a seminary in Pennsylvania near Philadelphia.

King planned his Maple Shade protest partly during his frequent stays at 753 Walnut Street in Camden – the now fire-damaged house, long owned by relatives of King’s fellow seminarian,. A close friend of King’s, McCall participated in that 1950 protest. Both King and McCall listed 753 as their residence on police reports about that incident.

Despite King’s pivotal firsts in New Jersey, the state’s Historic Preservation Office is curiously dismissive of King’s legacy in the state. HPO never funded a study for any of the 50,000-plus sites and properties then on the state’s Historic Registry.who’s sought a historic registry for 753 since 2015.

King’s lawsuit utilized an NJ anti-discrimination law, the first such statewide measure approved anywhere in the United States. Dr. James O. Hill, the second Black person to serve in NJ’s legislature
