Forty years after the release of “Candy Girl,” New Edition is still going strong with its Legacy Tour featuring Keith Sweat, Guy and Tank.
Obviously, you have all those landmark hits — ones that fans absolutely expect to hear at New Edition shows. But how do you decide what other material goes into the setlist?We have flexibility. It’s our stuff. We can call whatever play we need to call. We think about things that they want to hear. We think about things that they haven’t heard in awhile. I think we did great job servicing the audience.
Maybe they wanted to fix hip-hop first. Maybe now they need to come fix R&B and pop. That’s probably the real problem. They are over there appeasing a genre that is complaining, but they haven’t yet gotten to a genre that is just sitting there pounding the pavement. We’ve been out there longer than some of those rappers. But that’s OK. They deserve to be there if they got nominated.Hip-hop leans on you. R&B just sings to you. There’s a difference.Just do me a favor. Make sure it is B as in Boston, i, v as in Victor, i-n-s. Don’t let them put them an “e” in my name. Just B-I-V-I-N-S.It does. And it irritates me.
