New documents make USC look anything but innocent in the Varsity Blues case
Nobody is forcing colleges to sell access; that’s all on them. Here’s another way to look at this: This isn’t an indictment of America but of the elite college cartel and the pathologies that it has enabled and exploited. It’s an indictment of the way elite colleges sell fast-passes to lucrative jobs on Wall Street and in Silicon Valley . . .
Moreover, it is clear that boards of trustees should be adopting a far more assertive stance when it comes to holding university leaders responsible for the goings-on at their institutions. At public colleges and universities, it is similarly appropriate for elected officials to provide more oversight and demand more transparency from campus leaders.
It’s no surprise that USC administrators have been selling access and operating as co-conspirators to the sleaze merchants nailed by the Varsity Blues investigation. The surprise is that unsavory practices by colleges and universities have garnered so little attention. The question, then, is what, if anything, we intend to do about that.
