New Covid cases breach 100,000 for first time: Daily infections hit 106,122 after rising 35% in a week
Government dashboard shows 106,122 positive tests in the past 24 hours, up by a third on figure last week. While today's cases are most ever recorded in single day, there are signs week-on-week growth rate is slowing. Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford announced a wave of new Covid curbs coming into force on Boxing Day.
Measures will ban large indoor/outdoor gatherings while rule of six and table service will be imposed on pubs. Social distancing will return and people are being advised to limit household mixing as much as possible. Moves will pile pressure on Boris Johnson as he considers whether or not to impose more curbs in England
