The fight to remove to keep the long-standing Confederate monument in Springfield Park sees another day.
Now Councilman Matt Carlucci is re-introducing a new plan to remove local Confederate monuments after the city council shut down a similar one late last year.
“We’re capping the dollars at $500,000 instead of a million. The second thing is it’s going to exclude any monuments that might be in the public city cemetery. Don’t want to mess with the cemetery,” Councilman Matt Carlucci said.He said he is bringing it up now so a concrete plan can be made by July 26. That way it can be considered for the 2022–2023 city budget.
“I think we need to get the ball rolling and so I’m proposing this to my colleagues and I’m working on a format, my office is working on a format, that we could consider for a fair civil conversation,” Carlucci said.“We want to keep all the monuments. We want to put up new monuments. The famous Black men and women. We want to put a statue of a Black family there in Springfield Park,” Seber Newsome said.
Meanwhile, others want to see them gone for good, and have been consistently protesting to see it done. Wells Todd’s group will be doing so again on Monday as they have been every other week in front of City Hall.Carlucci said he wants to create a community conversation over the next few weeks, and he doesn’t want anyone to feel silenced over the issue.
Carlucci also said Tuesday’s reading won’t allow for any debate but there will be public comment where he expects to hear from locals on the monument removal
