New Chicago monuments will honor police torture victims, labor leader Mother Jones and gospel singer Mahalia Jackson, among others

Thank you for supporting our journalism. This article is available exclusively for our subscribers, who help fund our work at the Chicago Tribune. The worst racial violence in Chicago's history started July 27, 1919, when a Black teenager was killed at a South Side beach after crossing an invisible color line while swimming in Lake Michigan.

Rekia Boyd, 22, was fatally shot by off-duty Chicago police Officer Dante Servin in 2012. A planned monument, “A Long Walk Home,” will be dedicated to Boyd, one of eight new monuments funded by $6.8 million in grant money. The former mayor had said she didn’t believe in sanitizing history, but her pledge drew controversy from opponents of the monuments — even as an Italian American group sued her for removing another Columbus statue in Little Italy.

The city’s monuments project had four main goals: cataloging monuments and public art on city property and the property of related agencies like the Chicago Park District; filling out the advisory committee that will “determine which pieces warrant attention or action;” recommending new monuments or public art; and creating a dialogue about Chicago’s past. Part of the issue is a lack of representation for women and people of color.
